Frost warning!

The weather's been fairly unusual since we moved to Athens - we had a cool and lovely fall, and then there was that six inches of snow, and now we have a frost warning for tonight - April 7! Usually by this time I'd have expected us to have had an 85 degree day, but not yet (though we have hit the high 70s).

So tonight I will bring the hanging Boston Fern and petunias inside, leaving the things planted in the ground to fend for themselves. Most of the vegetables should be okay; the basil is in a pot and can come in, and I might bring in the lovely vigorous lettuces in their pot too, but the peas will shrug and the spinach is sickly anyway (I never do well with spinach). I have sensibly not yet procured seedlings of anything really delicate. The garden beds at Evelyn's school have some tomatoes, which even yesterday were well-wrapped up or placed under buckets (though we only got down to 38 degrees last night.

One thing to worry about is the local strawberry farm, where I had been hoping to be berry-picking in a few weeks.

Our back yard is currently ablaze with star of bethlehem:

Next post: what we bought at the botanical garden plant sale. Hint: perennials.
