Noises

Our house is about a mile east of the US Navy Supply Corps school campus. (I gather this is where they teach prospective Supply Corps people how to, like, order supplies. I dunno.) As a result, at 10pm every night as I lie quietly in bed (on the nights I haven't gone to bed at 8:30 that is) I can hear a trumpeter playing taps faintly in the distance. I suspect it's a digital trumpet, but it's kind of nice anyway.

About 6 blocks north of us, and across a major 4-lane street, there are train tracks. There's a regular 6am train that I hear a lot, and others through the day and evening. We looked at a house that was literally across the street from the train tracks (it needed way more work than we had energy for) and I think about how loud it would be if we lived there, or if we'd get used to it.

Morning and night I hear the ceiling squirrels in our bedroom. We need to work on this little problem before baby-having season is upon us.

Nights I sometimes hear an owl, mostly when I'm in Peter's bed helping him fall asleep. It has a high, fluttery sort of hoot that makes me think it's a tiny little owl, not some huge deep-voiced owl.

As spring comes on and the sun rises earlier, I am sure we will hear lots of birdsong. But we're not there yet.
