Seeds!

I buy most of my garden seeds from Johnny's Seeds. They are a smallish, employee-owned company in Maine, so it seems funny that a North Georgia gardener should be buying seeds from them. Since I learned how to garden in Maine, that is part of my excuse. I also just really like Johnny's - the level of customer service is excellent, and I feel that there are real people running the company. Also, the monthly emails from founder Rob Johnston about what's up in his garden are a wonderful bonus.

This year I possibly went a little overboard, given the relatively small square footage I have for planting at the moment (a 4x8 foot raised bed, a 2x12 foot bed at the base of the deck, some containers on the deck, and possibly I can insert some plants in the front yard or the side flower bed).

shell peas, Premium (half a pound!)
snow peas, Atitlan
green bush beans, Medinah
purple bush beans, Royal Burgundy
pole beans, Fortex
canteloupe, Halona
watermelon, Sugar baby
carrots, Nelson
beets, Red Ace
basil, Genovese compact
creeping thyme
2 kinds of marigolds, Lemon Gem and Queen Sophia
mild mesclun mix
scarlet runner beans (a flower)

Johnny's was sold out of the spinach seed I ordered, so I picked up some Burpee at Target this past weekend, since I want to start them soon.

I also want to buy seedlings of tomatoes (2-3 varieties, total 6-8 plants), zucchini (1-2), green peppers, and herbs: lavender, rosemary, oregano, more thyme (lemon!), AND of course we'll need some perennials and annuals. Spring is the time for thinking big, right?
