A Valor President zero-clearance gas-burning fireplace. They look lovely, come with an insert that mimics burning coal (which was what our fireplace probably originally burned), and are clean, safe, and self-venting to the outside. I prefer wood fires, but they do produce more particulate which is bad for air quality, and our fireplace is shallow enough that converting it to wood would probably be prohibitive.
We have a gas insert in one of our fireplaces now, but since it is not vented to anywhere, and we don't know the condition the chimney is in, we don't actually use it.
So, on the someday list.
