Saturday morning Michael got right to work to restore our water access. It was much easier to figure things out in the crawl space with some light.
Here's the shutoff valve for water for the whole house, right by the hot water heater (that cure blue on at top left). The line from the street to here is buried, which is why Michael was unable to find it in the night.

He found the two pipes that carry the water supply to the second floor right above the water heater. One tapped into the cold, and one to the hot line coming out of the water heater. In the photo they are the two blue-grey plastic pipes in the middle (one is sort of behind).

He ran out to Lowe's and got some connection caps (and a nice plumbing book from Taunton Press) and then disconnected the polybutylene and capped the connections with the hot and cold lines. The dangling disconnected polybutylene cold line is visible here, as is the capped connection.

A little dripping happened when he turned the water back on, but it worked great. By 10am e had water on the first floor and none on the second floor, which was the goal. We can live like that indefinitely, while we make a plan to replumb the second floor. (We're going to use PEX! I know what PEX is, thanks to Rich Trethewey!)
