If you slop paint (no primer, natch) over weathered wood on an outdoor surface - a deck, say, and its railings - the time it takes for it to get so completely flaky that you can almost strip it off with a shop-vac is approximately 3 years, in this climate.
I think I'm getting an electric sander for Mother's Day.
