This weekend marked the end of spring gardening and the start of summer. I ripped out the remains of the peas and kale, and harvested the first cucumber.
In the raised bed (where the peas and kale were) I planted purple beans, bush beans, and pole beans; planted out about 4 sunflower seedlings, and put in 2 each of watermelon and cantaloupe. Already existing were two volunteer tomatoes (one the great cherry tomato from the front yard last year, and the other a regular size) and tiny tiny basil sprouts.
In the second bed I currently have cucumbers producing fruit, green peppers flowering and about to, and two hybrid tomatoes with green fruits. Bush beans are in bloom, and sad scraggly beets are doing their sad scraggly thing. The two volunteer zucchini, which are taking over the place, finally have some female blooms, and I hand-pollinated one Saturday.
The long skinny bed has a later planting of bush beans, two small tomatoes started from seed, basil sprouts, and green onions started from seed. I added the last watermelon there too. I need to extend the bed and put in some squash seedlings I have and maybe more bush beans.
We've had a ton of rain the past couple of weeks, so I haven't watered in a long time. I'm a bit worried that things like the basil are not growing very fast - with rain, sun, and 85-90 degree temperatures, what more could they want?
In good coyote news, Michael mowed the lawn and reports no noticeable new poops. As far as I know, nobody's seen the coyote in at least 10 days now.
