starting seeds - really

In the absence of a special heated mat, soil-free starting mix, and grow lights, I have started some seeds in little pots in the sunniest place in the house:

I've got tomatoes (heirloom and cherry), cucumbers, tithonia, and scarlet runner beans. We'll see if anything happens. Must remember to WATER THEM.

I didn't start seeds outside this weekend (today being March 1, official Start Your Peas Day). I hope to Wednesday, which is my weekly morning home. I had hoped to move some compost from the base of the compost pile into the raised bed this weekend in preparation, but that didn't happen. Maybe it will happen on Wednesday.

Sunny sun sun and highs in the 50s mean lots of shoots poking up. The crocus are fully out; daffodils will start to flower this week, and bluebells probably too; daylilies have got tiny shoots. We're still getting frost or close to it overnight, though. It's been a colder than average winter.
