October garden report

We are still harvesting things - carrots and cherry tomatoes, mostly - despite a near-freeze a couple of weeks ago. I got a golf-ball sized cantaloupe as my sole melon of the year. And the remaining hybrid tomato has several large ones on the vine. Most of the broccoli seedlings I put in have been devastated by some kind of caterpillar.

I haven't yet planted the kale or spinach seeds I bought (whoops), but John Scheepers has let me know that my order of bulbs and peonies will be showing up on Friday, so perhaps we will have a planting extravaganza this weekend. I did put in two new native perennials in the side bed, a phlox stolonifera 'Blue Ridge' and a cardinal flower, lobelia cardinalis. Right now they are two inches high, but they may come to look like this:
