Fall gardening

It was a pleasantly cool Labor Day weekend (for Georgia values of pleasantly cool, which means highs of 85 degrees and not too humid) and we did a lot of yard work.

On Wednesday the 2nd I planted out most of the seeds I had left from this year: carrots, beets, mesclun lettuces, some creeping thyme, and marigolds. Old things still going on in the garden include cherry tomatoes (an excellent producer!), hybrid big tomatoes (about 5 green ones), watermelons (3 or so baby ones on the vine), a couple of final beans, carrots poking along, and lots of basil (must do a big pesto-making day).

Saturday we went to the big box store and picked up some spinach and kale seeds (not planted yet) and a raspberry and blackberry. I moved one of the blueberries and shifted the sage to the side yard, and planted the new berries, so we should have a fence o berries next year:

Monday Michael and Peter built my compost bed out of metal posts and chicken wire:

The prep involved removing the tree that fell on the shed in the March snow and dealing with the associated debris and overgrowth. I also did some brush clearing on the shady side of the house, trying to keep back the vines that take over everything.
